Green Tea Detox

Do you sometimes (or most of the time) feel as if you have no energy and you feel sluggish?

I do. I’m a bit overweight so I know that this accounts for some of my snail-like movement, but surely a little extra weight cannot account for how lethargic I sometimes feel!

But of course, you don’t have to be overweight to feel like crap and to have near to zero energy.

Naturally thin people can feel like this too and can also benefit from a detox.

So what can we do about this sluggish, lethargic lack of energy that we sometimes feel?

A DETOX!

I think we’ve all heard of detox and a detox diet and that they promise to cleanse your body to new energetic and euphoria heights!

There’s nothing like a good detox to make yourself feel energized and much less sluggish – with the added benefit that you’ll probably lose some pounds if you’re a little overweight too.

But what exactly is a detox and how can it really help you?

So in this article we’ll specifically look into:

  • Why you need to detox
  • Symptoms of a toxic liver
  • How to detox with green tea, and
  • Continued healthy eating & weight loss after the detox

Note: There are many different ways to do a detox cleanse, but in keeping-in-line with my green tea blog posts’ extravaganza, this article will focus on a green tea detox cleanse.

Why Detox?  What’s the Benefits?

Answer: To give your liver a break!

Your liver is one of the most important organs in your body in regards to keeping you healthy and making sure your body is functioning properly.

The functions of your liver are:

  • Cleanses your system of toxins
  • Controls hormone imbalances
  • Metabolizes proteins, fats and carbohydrates
  • Is a fat-burning machine
  • Eliminates cellulite (fatty deposits)
  • Restores and regenerates damaged cells

Note: These are just some of the functions of the liver as it performs approximately 400 different jobs, but those are a few of the main ones which we’re interested in.

Symptoms of a Toxic Liver:

  • Stored fat, mainly around your stomach, hips, thighs and bottom
  • Cellulite
  • Inability to lose a significant amount of weight
  • Bloating
  • Being irritable
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • High blood pressure, and
  • High cholesterol

Causes of a Toxic, Fatty Liver:

  • Trans fats (fried food, pastries, margarine)
  • Sugar (cakes, biscuits, sweets)
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking

If you can relate to some of the symptoms as above, then chances are that your liver is tired, over-worked and sluggish. This may be because it’s unable to function properly and is unable to rid the body of excess toxins, chemicals, additives and preservatives in processed food.

Sidenote: If you’re particularly worried about any of the above symptoms and your liver, then it’s always advisable to go and see your GP/doctor/physician.

How Does a Green Tea Detox Work?

A detox will help to release those pesky toxins from your liver.

And with the added component of the amazing green tea beverage, you’re feeding your body with an extra array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Green Tea Detox Benefits for Health

Benefits of Green Tea for Skin & FaceBy following a healthy diet and drinking green tea daily, you’re feeding your body with vitamins such as:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B(s)
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E, and
  • Vitamin K

… as well as all the other strongly-present antioxidants and minerals.

When combining the natural plant-based ingredients such as the ones present in green tea, along with drinking the actual tea itself, helps to increase the water and vitamins into the liver and immune system which aids:

  • Better digestion, and
  • More energy

… as well as many other health benefits too.

It’s this same green tea beverage intake which also feeds your cells directly with vitamin-rich water.  By increasing this vitamin-rich water into your cells, you consequently:

  • Lose body fat
  • Get better skin
  • Get thicker hair, and
  • Stronger nails and teeth.

This happens because some of the green tea ingredients (polyphenol antioxidants) fight free radicals and repair damaged cells, and then other natural nutrients feed those cells with the vitamins and minerals which are needed to grow, reproduce and thrive.

Green Tea Detox for Weight Loss

Green Tea for Weight LossYou don’t need to do a detox to lose weight, but a detox is an ideal kick-start to any weight loss journey.

Green tea has scientific evidence that it can help promote weight loss as long as it’s part of a healthy eating regimen.

You can’t lose weight just drinking green tea alongside eating pizza and burgers, but it definitely helps to burn more calories if you swap your fizzy drinks or normal coffee for green tea instead.

You could follow this suggested 7-day green tea detox diet as outlined below in this blog post, and then keep drinking green tea and follow a diet plan of your choice.  I go into more detail about green tea for weight loss in my blog post ‘Green Tea for Weight Loss, 9 Simple Green Tea Diet Tips To Get You Into Shape Fast‘.

But I suggest you read the rest of this detox blog post first and then read the above weight loss blog post second.

How To Detox With Green Tea

When you want to detox with green tea, you have to eat healthy, complimentary food alongside your green tea – you can’t just drink green tea and eat or drink nothing else.

So what food should you eat?

Try Raw Food

Raw Food for Detix

The one thing that surprised me most when I was studying for my anti aging therapy diploma, is that eating raw food is so much better for you, both health and skin care wise, than eating cooked food – no matter how it’s cooked.

Food that has been heated enough to change its composition has lost most of the vitamins, minerals and enzymes that were once contained in that food. Your skin and body needs those vitamins and minerals to stay healthy and functioning at its best ability.

Think of it as a blood flow of pure vitamins instead of toxins running through your body and ending up in your liver.

You would much rather have the vitamin blood flow than the toxic blood flow, I’m sure.

When you overcook food, this leads to free radical formation which blocks the basement membranes and the absorption of nutrients.  It also increases the count of your white blood cells in your body, which in-turn increases the number of dead cells.

…. and we don’t want dead cells; we want nice, healthy, juicy ones!

I know, it can get all very science-y, of which I struggled to get my head around at times, but stay with me on this because eating a raw food diet for your detox will only be for a short period of time.

Uncooked Food

When you eat raw, fresh foods, all the nutrients in them are kept and preserved.  So you consume all those wonderful vitamins, minerals, amino acids and oxidants by not destroying them with heat when you cook them (even steaming vegetables).

Suggested examples of raw detox-friendly foods:

  • Leafy greens
  • Peppers
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Red cabbage
  • Spring greens
  • Radishes
  • Avocado
  • blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Oranges
  • Grapefruit
  • Tomatoes
  • Beetroot
  • Seaweed
  • Celery
  • Nuts & Seeds

How You Can Eat These:

Vegetable Salads | Smoothies | Fruit Salads

When you look at the above image, eating raw food doesn’t seem so bad now does it?

If fact, some people only eat a raw food diet.  No cooked or processed food, just 100% raw food and absolutely swear by it for both health and anti aging reasons.

Here’s an amazing woman who only eats natural, fresh uncooked food.

She was 70 years old when this YouTube video was published in 2012!

The main focus of her success is on her youthful looks (which are bloody amazing!) but I also want to point out how slender and healthy she looks.  In the video she says that she doesn’t need any medication at all and doesn’t even need to take an aspirin tablet for anything.

I know that this is the extreme but I just want to point out the benefits of eating a raw food, plant-based diet as a detox-method way of getting rid of your toxins and replacing them with healthy vitamins and nutrients.

So do you think you could you do this for at least five days as part of your green tea detox?

How To Make Detox Tea

21 Green Tea Benefits

It depends on what type of green tea you choose as to how to make it.

These are the different ways you can make your green tea:

  • Loose leaf
  • Tea bags
  • Powdered

And these are the different variation types of green tea you can buy:

  • Matcha Green Tea
  • Green Rooibos Green Tea
  • Best Organic Green Tea
  • Loose Leaf Green Tea
  • Salada Green Tea

Green Tea Enhancements

Try not to add milk to your green tea as it will decrease the nutritional benefits that make green tea the healthy famous drink as we know it.

I’ve read that some people like to add a teaspoon of natural honey in green tea to give it a sweeter taste, as green tea can be quite bitter.

You could also add other ingredients such as:

  • A squeeze of lemon
  • Lavender petals (with cold, iced green tea)
  • Ginger
  • Mango and/or Kiwi (blitzed with ice)

You can use your imagination, based on your taste buds, and get creative with green tea enhancements to make it as enjoyable for you as possible.

As you’ve just read above, you can also have green tea cold, chilled or iced if you don’t like hot green tea or just fancy an alternative to that of the more traditional route.

How Long To Detox For?

I would say that it takes at least five days to get the toxins completely out of your body.  Therefore, your detox needs to be at least for five days.

5-7 Day Detox

Completely cut out:

  • Coffee & normal, regular tea
  • Milk and dairy products (yogurts, cheese)
  • Refined sugar (cakes, biscuits etc)
  • Carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice etc)
  • Alcohol, and
  • Cigarettes
  • Fish*
  • Lean protein*, and
  • legumes*

So for 5-7 days you would:

  • Have fruit/vegetable smoothies (made with water/coconut milk/whey protein powder)
  • Infused water drinks
  • Green tea
  • Vegetable salads
  • Fruit salads
  • Sprinkle seeds and nuts on your salads to give them texture and the protein element of your detox

* These foods will be introduced as soon as your strict detox is over.

7-14 Day Detox

If you’re enjoying your new-found detox diet, then increase it to 7-14 days if you’re not struggling with missing any of the ‘not-prohibited’ foods and drinks.

Be Prepared for Side-Effects

From my own personal experience of just cutting out foods such as bread, pasta and coffee, I’ve experienced feeling quite ill around the 3rd-day mark.  I would have a headache, no energy and just a general feeling of unwell – and this wan’t doing a full detox as described above!

I’ve also saw, first hand, family members and friends going through the same thing when they have either started a new weight-loss diet, or they have decided to do a healthy eating detox.

It’s also well documented and commented on (in book reviews, forums, Facebook groups etc.) that these side-effects are common among many people when they drastically cut out more than one food type/group from their diet.

So just be warned that you may feel unwell after the second or third day of doing any kind of detox.

BUT, it is a passing symptom and you will start to pick up after a couple of days or so of feeling unwell.

Why Will I Feel Unwell?

This is just the side-effect of the toxins and chemicals leaving your body and the withdrawal symptoms of cutting out sugar (both refined and from carbohydrates such as bread & pasta), coffee, alcohol, nicotine etc.

This is perfectly normal and this should not be an excuse to ditch your detox diet.  This ‘poorly’ feeling is actually a good thing because it means that your body is on it’s way to becoming clean and toxic free!

How And What To Eat After Your Detox

Once you’ve finished your green tea detox (whether that be 5, 7 or 14 days), then you can start to introduce some of the healthier foods from the initial prohibited list.

Introduce:

  • Legumes (edamame or black beans)
  • Baked or broiled fish
  • Lean poultry
  • Fresh eggs

If you can, still continue to drink your green tea and infused water instead of going back to your regular coffee or tea.

Then you can start implementing some low GI (Glycemic Index) carbohydrates, such as:

  • Sweet potato, and
  • Brown rice
  • Bran flakes

to give you more variety so you don’t get bored and to give you an overall healthy balance of vitamins and nutrients.

Conclusion

So now you know how to detox with green tea to get all the benefits of rich, fresh plant-based foods and drinks.

Because not only will fresh, raw foods + green tea give you an amazing detox to get rid of your sluggish toxins to energise you, this detox plan is also a fantastic anti aging source to help repair and replenish your skin cells.  This in-turn gives you a glowing complexion, whilst simultaneously helping to reduce those fine lines and wrinkles (or preventing them if you don’t have any yet!)

As I’ve said near the beginning of this blog post, there are many different ways to detox with different foods – but I hope you can see where I’m coming from with the raw food approach and how it seamlessly ties in brilliantly with a green tea detox diet.

Good luck!
