A Cheap DIY Alternative To
Alphosyl Shampoo (or Similar)
The Experiment!
We always keep a jar of coconut oil in our home, specifically in the ‘cup cupboard’, since I first heard about putting a spoonful of coconut oil in your coffee for health reasons and to help with weight loss.
This was about five years ago.
Since then, we (me and my husband) have been using coconut oil for a variety of reasons:
- For ‘bullet proof’ coffee.
- For cooking.
- For skin care.
Since I’m so impressed with coconut oil as its very versatile, and especially great for skin care, that I wrote a whole article on it:
11 Best Coconut Oils for Your Skin
I mentioned to my husband that I had wrote an article on coconut oil for this blog and that when I was doing my research, I found that coconut oil was also great for your hair and scalp too.
Scalp conditions such as:
- Psoriasis.
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis.
- Eczema.
- Scaling,
- Dandruff, and
- Itchiness.
Alphosyl Medicated Shampoo
My husbands ears pricked up at this discovery as he has an itchy scalp condition and uses the specialty shampoo Alphosyl.
Because Alphosyl is a specialty medicated shampoo, it comes at a higher cost than normal shampoos – around £8.00 a bottle depending where you buy it from.
He’s been using it for years with excellent results, and his scalp has never become immune to it.
Also my teenage son has also started to get an itchy scalp, and he has started using this shampoo too.
So this £8 bottle of shampoo only lasts half the time it used to – double the cost.
Enter The Coconut Oil Experiment
So when my husband was listening to me talk about my coconut oil article, and my personal discovery that its also great for hair and scalp, he thought he would experiment.
The next day, before his daily tea-time shower (after work), he went to the ‘cup cupboard’ and got out our jar of coconut oil.
He scooped out a tablespoons’ worth of coconut oil, scraped it into a cup and popped it into the microwave for a few seconds, just enough so it was runny.
He then just rubbed it all-over into his scalp.
He left it there for about five minutes, then proceeded to go upstairs to get sorted for his daily shower.
He then just showered as usual and rinsed off the coconut oil.
Waiting For The Proof
Just so you know, my husband has to wash his hair everyday because of his itchy scalp, so we didn’t have to wait long to see if this experiment worked for him.
It was literally just the case of him coming home from work and asking him if his scalp had been itchy that day.
Normally by about 6.00 pm he needs to go into the shower to wash his hair because his scalp is so itchy.
So the next day, when arriving home from work, he reported that his scalp had not been itchy at all and that he could wait until his 6.00 pm shower.
This continued on successfully for about one week until we concluded that he would replace the Alphosol with coconut oil.
The itchy scalp coconut oil experiment was a success!
The Teenager
Sean (my husband) then mention the coconut oil experiment to our son. Matthew, the teenager, sarcastically (but in a humorous way) ‘congratulated’ his dad on his coconut oil experiment success and then swiftly made the statement that he would in no circumstances be rubbing oil into his head.
And this is how it continues today.
Sean continues to use the coconut oil, but we still have to buy Alphosyl for Matthew.
Oh well, you can’t win them all!
